It was titled the 2nd Annual Great Lakes Summit. </p>
<p>This year, it was titled the <a href="http://www.imba.com/blog/hansi-johnson/imba-upper-midwest-regional-summit">IMBA Upper Midwest Regional Summit</a> and it was hosted in Cable, WI, in the middle of the <a href="http://www.cambatrails.org/">Chequamegon Area Mountain Bike Association</a> (<a href="http://www.cambatrails.org/">CAMBA</a>)&#8217;s off-road bike trail system.</p>

Smith</a>) presented on the legal ins and outs of IMBA Chapters having&#160; MOU&#8217;s, partnership agreements, contracts, etc. with land managers/owners.&#160; Several Chapter board members I talked to afterwards seemed grateful, worried, and motivated to roll up their sleeves upon returning home to delve deeper into their land manager agreements and do what needs to be done to make them better.</p>

In the Western US, there&#8217;s a push with land managers to allow fat bikes to share the use of cross country ski and snowmobile trails for touring-type riding in the winter. But here in the Midwest, he felt it&#8217;s far better for Chapters to focusing on grooming some of their singletrack for both fat bikes and regular mountain bikes; hence, a good chunk of his presentation was about the variety of snow grooming techniques and equipment being used in the area. Reed Smidt, president of <a href="http://www.morcmtb.org/">MORC</a>, gave details on their grooming experiences in the past few years.</p>

<p>COGGS has learned 1) how to leverage small grants into a series of ever-larger grants; and 2) that face-to-face, ongoing contact with the grantee organization is critically important, ie, it&#8217;s not enough to just submit the application. They&#8217;ve also learned that 1) its annual Gala allows them to reach out to a segment of the Duluth population that doesn&#8217;t mountain bike but who believes in its importance to the area. Attendees include community leaders and the more financially well-off; 2) it&#8217;s best to have auction items have wide appeal rather than being mtb-related (eg, vacation packages, restaurant deals, etc); and 3) the committee in charge of the Gala works on it for the entire year.</p>
<p>Copper Harbor has learned 1) how to scale the value of its sponsorships from local business owners; and 2) how to conduct a raffle with large ticket items (2013 raffle: $6,000 camping trailer, $4,400 Trek, etc).</p>

<blockquote><p>a next-generation mountain bike guide and trail map web site. This robust platform for online mapping displays the known trails in any given area, complete with elevation profiles, full GPS routes, photos, detailed ride info and more.</p>
</blockquote>
<p>They&#8217;re going to be adding a feature that I think will create an incentive for Chapters to participate/contribute: once a trail has been mapped, embed code for it can be put on a Chapter&#8217;s own website. The quality of the mapping is not something that a Chapter could easily do on its own, so when this happens, it will be a pretty big deal IMHO.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.imba.com/blog/author/Leslie%20and%20Chris%20Kehmeier">Leslie blogs about the project at IMBA.com</a>. <blockquote><p>If you&#8217;ve visited the <a href="http://www.mtbproject.com/">MTB Project</a> website you may have noticed two categories: &quot;rides&quot; and &quot;trails.&quot; Some have wondered what the difference might be — one doesn’t exist without the other, right?</p>

I took one photo as riders were getting ready to depart but the vicious mosquitoes created a strong incentive to keep it in my hydration pack thereafter.&#160; His description of the new (built last summer) cross country flow trail: </p>
<blockquote><p>5 miles of fast riding, open &amp; flowing with dozens of bermed turns plus two super-fun gravity features and a 180-foot log ride. Start from our newest trailhead on Camp 38 Rd. &#8211; so new there are hardly any signs yet.</p>

Most notable for me was 1) the <a href="http://www.mtbproject.com/photo/135666">steep rocky downhill section called Wall Street</a>; and 2) the No Hands Bridge (I used both hands and road the angled cut board). The above right photo is from <a href="http://rlove2bike.blogspot.com/2011/05/rock-lake.html">this blog post about the entire Rock Lake trail</a> by someone named rlove2bike.</p>
<p>All in all, &#8217;twas a memorable weekend of great weather, good information, tasty food, excellent microbrews, and exhilarating riding, all stitched together with friends new and old.&#160; Saaaaaweeeet.</p>

<p><a href="http://mountainbikegeezer.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/DSC00481.jpg"><img title="DSC00481" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: left; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px 5px 0px 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC00481" align="left" src="http://mountainbikegeezer.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/DSC00481_thumb.jpg" width="149" height="99" /></a><a href="http://mountainbikegeezer.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/DSC00456.jpg"><img title="DSC00456" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: right; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 0px 5px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC00456" align="right" src="http://mountainbikegeezer.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/DSC00456_thumb.jpg" width="135" height="99" /></a>But it occurred to me during last week&#8217;s <a href="http://www.copperharbortrails.org/event/ride-the-keweenaw">Ride the Keweenaw</a> that I might be able to watch the sun rise over the lake, too. I got up early and drove east on US 41. It turned to a dirt road and I kept going till I saw a crude sign that said &quot;Horseshoe harbor&quot; and followed that road and eventually discovered a walking trail that led to the <a href="http://www.nature.org/ourinitiatives/regions/northamerica/unitedstates/michigan/placesweprotect/mary-macdonald-preserve-at-horseshoe-harbor.xml">Mary Macdonald Preserve at Horseshoe Harbor</a>, managed by the Nature Conservancy:</p>
<blockquote><p>At the northernmost tip of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, stunted shrubs and trees cling to ancient bedrock directly in the path of Lake Superior’s fierce winds. The 1,261 acre Mary Macdonald Preserve at Horseshoe Harbor is the largest and highest quality mainland preserve for bedrock beach and bedrock glade communities in Michigan. The rock ridges that define the shoreline are wave-eroded edges of sedimentary conglomerate rock uplifted some 600 million years ago. They now create a barrier between the pounding wind and waves of Lake Superior and the woodlands behind them, protecting and allowing the emergence of slower growth plant species.</p>
</blockquote>
<p>I took a few photos:</p>
<p><a href="http://mountainbikegeezer.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/DSC00361.jpg"><img title="DSC00361" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC00361" src="http://mountainbikegeezer.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/DSC00361_thumb.jpg" width="155" height="103" /></a>&#160;<a href="http://mountainbikegeezer.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/DSC00400.jpg"><img title="DSC00400" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC00400" src="http://mountainbikegeezer.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/DSC00400_thumb.jpg" width="155" height="103" /></a>&#160;<a href="http://mountainbikegeezer.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/DSC00413.jpg"><img title="DSC00413" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC00413" src="http://mountainbikegeezer.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/DSC00413_thumb.jpg" width="155" height="103" /></a></p>
<p>but I didn&#8217;t get a decent one of the huge &#8216;conglomerate rock&#8217; along the shore.&#160; I found this photo online from a <a href="http://img.geocaching.com/cache/large/40c1a72e-46ac-4b14-a03b-a71681e4af49.jpg">geocache page</a>:</p>

During last week&#8217;s <a href="http://www.copperharbortrails.org/event/ride-the-keweenaw">Ride the Keweenaw</a>, Copper Harbor&#8217;s restaurants provided opportunities to do some scheming about <a href="https://www.facebook.com/IMBAUpperMidwest">IMBA&#8217;s Upper Midwest region</a> (Facebook page).</p>
<p><strong>Left photo</strong>: Friday night dinner at the <a href="http://www.harborhaus.com/">Harbor Haus</a> with <a href="http://www.copperharbortrails.org/chtc-board">Aaron Rogers</a>, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/karl.erbach">Karl Erbach</a>, and <a href="http://www.imba.com/blog/author/Hansi%20Johnson">Hansi Johnson</a>.</p>
<p><strong>Center</strong>: Monday morning breakfast at the <a href="http://www.pinesresort.net/rest.html">Pines Restaurant</a> with (L to R) with <a href="http://www.copperharbortrails.org/chtc-board">Lori Hauswirth</a>, <a href="http://www.imba.com/blog/author/Hansi%20Johnson">Hansi Johnson</a>, <a href="http://www.copperharbortrails.org/chtc-board">Aaron Rogers</a>, <a href="http://www.noquetrails.org/contact">Mike Brunet</a>, and <a href="http://www.noquetrails.org/contact">Lyle VanderSchaaf</a>.</p>
<p><strong>Right</strong>: The conversation at times turned to mountain bike tourism for the Upper Midwest region, as epitomized by Jay and Claire, two college students visiting Copper Harbor from Vermont. They were traveling to Montana, trying to visit as many mountain bike parks as possible on their way. For their next stops after Copper, I told them that the sequence (heading west) would be to ride <a href="http://www.cambatrails.org/">CAMBA</a>, <a href="http://spiritmt.com/adventure-park/mountain-biking/index.html">Spirit Mountain</a>, <a href="http://coggs.com/">COGGS</a>, and then <a href="http://cuyunalakesmtb.com/">Cuyuna</a>. Alas, due to the wet and cold spring, only Cuyuna would work for this trip.</p>

<p>As this <a href="http://trails.mtbr.com/cat/united-states-trails/trails-michigan/trail/copper-harbor-pathway/prd_325209_4555crx.aspx">April 8 2013 reviewer wrote on MTBR</a> about the trail system:</p>
<blockquote><p>There&#8217;s a little for everyone, with technical rocky areas, long flow rides, extended downhill tabletop jump sections, climbs that make you whoop if you manage to scramble up, boardwalks, simple trails next to dropoffs&#8230; just spectacular.</p>

Much of the big stuff on the double black diamond trails was over my head but even on runs like the Flying Squirrel and On the Edge there was still plenty of fun stuff that I could ride.&#160; </p>
<p><a href="http://mountainbikegeezer.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/20130526_164424.jpg"><img title="dual suspension Kona Process - rental from the Keweenaw Adventure Company " style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: right; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 0px 5px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="dual suspension Kona Process - rental from the Keweenaw Adventure Company " align="right" src="http://mountainbikegeezer.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/20130526_164424_thumb.jpg" width="89" height="67" /></a>But it wasn&#8217;t till I <a href="http://www.keweenawadventure.com/rentals.htm">rented a dual suspension Kona Process from the Keweenaw Adventure Company</a> that I got a taste of what&#8217;s possible. </p>
<p>I was shocked how much easier it was for me to pump the rollers and go fast on the downhill gnarly stuff than with my hardtail 29&#8242;er.&#160; Full squish has just moved ahead of a fat bike on my bike quiver priority list.</p>

That page says:</p>
<blockquote><p><a href="http://mountainbikegeezer.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/Aaron-Rogers.jpg"><img title="Aaron Rogers, MTB trail builder" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: right; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 0px 5px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="Aaron Rogers, MTB trail builder" align="right" src="http://mountainbikegeezer.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/Aaron-Rogers_thumb.jpg" width="155" height="103" /></a>Aaron came in search of epic snowboarding at Mt. Bohemia and stayed to build epic bike trails in Copper Harbor. A man with a vision for greatness, Aaron built upon a foundation of great trails on great terrain and turned them world class. Now a contracted professional trail builder with <a href="http://www.imba.com/trail-solutions">IMBA Trail Solutions</a>, Aaron’s heart remains in Copper Harbor. </p>
<p>Fortunately for us (and his wife Amanda), he prefers to build trails in Copper Harbor but also dabbles farther south on the Peninsula. If you find Aaron, it will be at the end of a newly built trail at the controls of the mini-excavator or with Pulaski in hand. If you can’t find him, it is most likely because you can’t catch him. He’s as good a rider as he is a trail builder.</p>
</blockquote>
<p>Like most everyone else who&#8217;s ridden Copper, I can&#8217;t wait to go back.&#160; And I&#8217;m thrilled that some of the MTB parks here in Minnesota are learning from what&#8217;s been done there.</p>

Sam Raymond owns the <a href="http://www.keweenawadventure.com/">Keweenaw Adventure Company</a> in Copper Harbor. He offers a <a href="http://www.keweenawadventure.com/shuttle_service.htm">shuttle service</a> to mountain bikers who come to ride the <a href="http://www.copperharbortrails.org/trails">Copper Harbor Trails system</a>. Why?</p>
<blockquote><p>Because there is no ski area with a chairlift in Copper Harbor, the KAC shuttle is the next best way to get you and your mountain bike to the top of the mountain without having to pedal! An activity that is most commonly associated with ski resorts out west, mountain bikers enjoy bombing down Copper Harbor&#8217;s sustained vertical descents along the miles of sweet singletrack that connect the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge, Brockway Mountain and the village, nearly 600&#8242; vertical and up to 3 miles below.</p></blockquote>

On the Sunday of the <a href="http://www.copperharbortrails.org/event/ride-the-keweenaw">Ride the Keweenaw</a> weekend, the shuttle was busy. They put up chains in front of the shop to provide some first-come, first-served structure to the riders waiting to get taken to the top. Once everyone piles inside the 14-passenger van, the driver (either Sam or one of his two trusty bike mechanics Jeff Squires or Jerry Smith) yells out &#8220;Where to?&#8221;</p>
<p><a href="http://mountainbikegeezer.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130525_164551.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-width: 0px;" title="Keweenaw Mountain Lodge" alt="Keweenaw Mountain Lodge" src="http://mountainbikegeezer.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130525_164551_thumb.jpg" width="155" height="111" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://mountainbikegeezer.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130526_115835.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-width: 0px;" title="mountain bike shuttle service, Keweenaw Adventure Company" alt="mountain bike shuttle service, Keweenaw Adventure Company" src="http://mountainbikegeezer.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130526_115835_thumb.jpg" width="176" height="111" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://mountainbikegeezer.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130526_115747.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-width: 0px;" title="Sam Raymond, Keweenaw Adventure Company" alt="Sam Raymond, Keweenaw Adventure Company" src="http://mountainbikegeezer.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130526_115747_thumb.jpg" width="155" height="111" border="0" /></a><br />
A consensus quickly emerges as the choice is simple: either the parking lot at <a href="http://www.atthelodge.com/">Keweenaw Mountain Lodge</a> or the top of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brockway_Mountain_Drive">Brockway Mountain</a>, both about a mile from town.  If you miss the shuttle, it&#8217;s no biggie. It can make a round trip in 15-20 minutes.  And Sam&#8217;s <a href="http://www.keweenawadventure.com/shuttle_service.htm">getting another 14-passenger this summer</a> to speed things up even further.</p>
<p><a href="http://mountainbikegeezer.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130525_184116.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-width: 0px;" title="Hansi Johnson, top of Brockway Mountain" alt="Hansi Johnson, top of Brockway Mountain" src="http://mountainbikegeezer.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130525_184116_thumb.jpg" width="155" height="111" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://mountainbikegeezer.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130525_184148.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-width: 0px;" title="Griff Wigley, top of Brockway Mountain" alt="Griff Wigley, top of Brockway Mountain" src="http://mountainbikegeezer.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130525_184148_thumb.jpg" width="155" height="111" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://mountainbikegeezer.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130525_181721.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-width: 0px;" title="Stairway to Heaven trail, Copper Harbor" alt="Stairway to Heaven trail, Copper Harbor" src="http://mountainbikegeezer.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130525_181721_thumb.jpg" width="155" height="111" border="0" /></a><br />
The shuttle currently runs noon-5:00pm on weekends and 5:30-9:30pm on Tuesdays. If you want to ride the trails at other times, team up with someone else for a DIY shuttle service with two vehicles like I did with <a href="http://www.imba.com/blog/author/Hansi%20Johnson">IMBA’s Midwest Regional Director Hansi Johnson</a> and his snazzy Subaru Outback.  Of course, you can also pedal to the top.  Hansi said that riding up the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fi1PKIFQ_8A">Stairway to Heaven trail</a> (that&#8217;s a link to a recent YouTube video) is the easiest route to the top.  Nearly all trails at Copper are two-way, and riders going up have priority over riders going down, although I mainly experienced the opposite.</p>

<a href="http://www.imba.com/blog/author/Hansi%20Johnson">IMBA’s Midwest Regional Director Hansi Johnson</a> and I arrived in Houghton on Friday afternoon to ride some of <a href="http://www.michigantechrecreation.com/trails/bike/index">Michigan Tech University&#8217;s network of mountain biking trails</a>. We luckily arrived at the same time as Oliver Cooper, MTU engineering student and avid mountain biker. He led us on some very cool technical trails (rocks, roots, mud) that included some fun man-made obstacles like the Dragon and the Dorkscrew shown above (photos extracted from the poster).</p>

A late addition to the <a href="http://www.copperharbortrails.org/event/ride-the-keweenaw">Ride the Keweenaw</a> schedule was a Friday night ride on some of the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/SoKeTrails">Southern Keweenaw (SöKē)</a> trails around the <a href="http://www.adventureminetours.com/">Adventure Mining Company</a> in Greenland, about 40 minutes south of Copper Harbor. Staffer Rob Peters (and course designed of the annual <a href="http://www.minersrevenge.com/">Miner&#8217;s Revenge Mountain Bike Race</a>) graciously led the ride and opened up the trail through the mine for us.  Very cool. (Other than the group shot on the left above, I didn&#8217;t take photos, so I&#8217;ve grabbed two of the mine tunnel from a <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/7748942@N08/sets/72157621225166675/">Flickr album of the 2009 race</a> by Christopher Schmidt. I&#8217;ve linked his photos to <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/7748942@N08/sets/72157621225166675/">his set</a>.)  Some rocky sections of the trail we rode were the most technically challenging and fun I&#8217;ve ever ridden.  If you love the gnarly stuff, especially steep, rocky downhills, go there. &#8220;The Adventure Trails are free use public trails open 7 days a week for hiking, running, and mountain biking.&#8221;</p>

Saturday&#8217;s 9 am group rides were held at <a href="http://www.michigantechrecreation.com/trails/bike/index">Michigan Tech&#8217;s network of mountain biking trails</a> (supported by a trail pass honor system). I was thrilled that they offered 4 choices ranging from beginner to expert because my legs were mush from the 4 hours of riding on Friday. I chose &#8216;intermediate&#8217; and was barely able to keep up.</p>
<p><a href="http://mountainbikegeezer.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130525_112216.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border: 0px;" title="Caleb Wendel and Steve Vizanko" alt="Caleb Wendel and Steve Vizanko" src="http://mountainbikegeezer.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130525_112216_thumb.jpg" width="142" height="111" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://mountainbikegeezer.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130525_114243.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border: 0px;" title="Steve Vizanko" alt="Steve Vizanko" src="http://mountainbikegeezer.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130525_114243_thumb.jpg" width="155" height="111" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://mountainbikegeezer.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130525_114255.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border: 0px;" title="pump and jump park at Michigan Tech" alt="pump and jump park at Michigan Tech" src="http://mountainbikegeezer.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130525_114255_thumb.jpg" width="155" height="111" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://mountainbikegeezer.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130525_114550.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border: 0px;" title="MTU dual slalom MTB course" alt="MTU dual slalom MTB course" src="http://mountainbikegeezer.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130525_114550_thumb.jpg" width="148" height="111" border="0" /></a><br />
Post-ride food and refreshments were provided by co-owners Caleb Wendel and Steve Vizanko of <a href="http://goridebikes.com/">The Bike Shop</a> in downtown Houghton. Steve also did some jump coaching in the MTU terrain park (beginner and advanced jumps, a pump track, and a dual slalom course). I was thrilled to be able work on my form on the beginner level table tops that <a href="http://mountainbikegeezer.com/posts/30-seconds-of-coaching-from-jed-olson-and-i-learn-to-jump-a-table-top/">first learned how to do at Ray&#8217;s Indoor Bike Park back in Feb</a>. See the May 26 Mining Gazette article, <a href="http://www.mininggazette.com/page/content.detail/id/529957/Riders-practice-jumping-during-R---.html">Riders practice jumping during Ride the Keweenaw</a>, for more.</p>
<p>At noon, most riders departed for more group rides at <a href="http://www.keweenawtrails.com/trails/churning.html">Churning Rapids MTB trails</a> near Hancock (1 pm) and the <a href="http://www.keweenawtrails.com/trails/swedetown.html">Swedetown MTB trails</a> near Calumet (3 pm). Alas, not me. I departed for Copper Harbor to give my legs some recovery time so that I&#8217;d be able to get in at least one run on a downhill trail there.</p>

Colin&#8217;s tire was shot: punctured tube and blown sidewall. Karl patched the tube and then deployed a trick I&#8217;d never seen before. He used a candy bar wrapper (he said a dollar bill would work, too) to reinforce the sidewall. </p>

<p>Dave and Colin were soon smiling on their way back to town, riding 3 miles instead of having to do a tough hike-a-bike. </p>
