The Science Of Immediate Vs. Delayed Feedback For The Science Of Immediate Vs. Delayed Feedback For Learning A Mountain Biking Skill May Surprise You

I first learned about a different way to give and receive feedback when learning a motor skill from Timothy Gallwey in his Inner Games books on tennis, golf, and skiing/snowboarding ( theinnergame.com )

I was reminded of some of Gallwey’s principles last week when I stumbled on an excellent article by @jarloilano, co-founder of @gmbfitness, titled,

"Learn Movement Skills Faster with these 5 Motor Learning Strategies"

His first strategy: delay technical feedback.

Why?

Immediate feedback tends to improve learning in the short term. However, delayed feedback is better for long-term retention.

How so? Ilano writes:

"Immediate feedback interferes with the brain’s information processing of all the sensory and motor pattern reactions during and after the skill performance. The motor learning you would have gotten from “messing up” and giving yourself feedback later on is interrupted by the immediate feedback you’re getting."

The research indicates that too much instruction can be as bad as no instruction.

I unpack all this in a new post to the MTB Practice Lab newsletter. Link in the bio.

I had to go down to 1 PSI in the tires: difficult but rideable! I pooped out and took the train access road back

While leisurely riding my Advocate Cycles Watchman While leisurely riding my Advocate Cycles Watchman fat bike (a @tkadv special) along the Sechler Park @croctmtb trail near @downtownnorthfieldmn on Saturday, I got lucky with a couple of photos.

I was practicing drops from an extremely high ledg I was practicing drops from an extremely high ledge in downtown Minneapolis last week but there wasn't anyone around to take my photo.

So I asked @openaidalle to create “a cyberpunk illustration of a man wearing an orange helmet launching a mountain bike off a ledge.”

This rendering is pretty much how I remember it.
After about 3 dozen attempts, I finally managed to After about 3 dozen attempts, I finally managed to clean (no dabs) this log skinny in both directions yesterday.

It's located on the @cityofnorthfield's Sechler Park MTB trail along the Cannon River, created and managed by @croctmtb -- the mountain biking club in Rice County.

The video is 1 minute, with a couple of 'fails' at the end.

Coincidentally, I had my annual Medicare Wellness Visit today. They always ask me if I've fallen lately. I usually answer, "Well, it depends."
