Last week I paid 3 visits to the fantastic #rubyhi Last week I paid 3 visits to the fantastic #rubyhillbikepark operated by @denverbikeparks.

I have not done any jumping since the autumn prior to the start of the pandemic so I was rusty.

But by the end of my Day 2 practice session, I had regained my form on the small jump line. And I then felt surprisingly confident about taking runs on the medium jump line. So Much Fun.

My problem to work on: Weak extension on the take-offs.

See the comparison image of 4 screenshots appended to the end of the video.

It shows me vs an instructor (taken from an #rlcconnection instructional video) as our rear wheels depart the lips. The top two screenshots are of small jump take-offs; bottom screenshots are of medium jump take-offs

A few years ago I started learning mostly useless A few years ago I started learning mostly useless but fun MTB skills/maneuvers/tricks. Since I haven't (yet!) learned to hold a wheelie for a block or more -- the ultimate cool show-off maneuver, IMHO -- I wanted to have some other show-off maneuvers in my riding quiver that were easier to learn.

I started with one-handed track stands and then gradually added no-handed figure 8s, slow fakies, rolling tuck no-handers, and most recently, backward forward pedaling.

Last week, I practiced them all after most of the snow had melted.

Safety tip: empty parking lots with a smooth surface are best when practicing rolling tuck no-handers, backward/forward pedaling, and no-handed figure 8s.

1. It's risky to have vehicle traffic or pedestrians around when you don't have both your hands securely on your brakes.

2. A surface with bumps, cracks, rocks or loose pebbles increases the likelihood that you'll crash because:

* Your front wheel can flop sharply when doing no-handed figures 8s at slow speeds

* Having much of your body weight far forward on the bars for rolling tuck no-handers and backward/forward pedaling increases the likelihood you'll go OTB.

Doing stunts that are somewhat risky is part of the fun. But don't be unnecessarily stupid!

I've been working on my "upright problem" on this I've been working on my "upright problem" on this boulder. With some help from @patmitzel and @charles_lopz, I've figured out that:

* I don't bend my knees, allowing the rear wheel to continue its rise after unweighting

* I don't push the bars, using leverage to also help the rear wheel to continue its rise

It's occurred to me that those two motions are similar to the final phase of a high bunny hop, a phase that I also can't do.

So I now know what drills I have to practice to fix this problem. They're explained and shown in Lesson 22.2 | Hip Hands #2 of the @ryanleechconnection Bunny Hop Master Class

Winter Challenge #1 at the @ryanleechconnection is Winter Challenge #1 at the @ryanleechconnection is all about doing spray skids, an informal contest dreamed up by @pedalfitruss.mtb with encouragement from @ryankleech. "How high or large of a skid spray can you create?"

I'm ineligible to win a prize since I'm an RLC Coach. But since Russ is encouraging everyone to "find your inner kid in the skid," I couldn't resist.

After a day of ugly practice last week, today's session turned out better. 35-second video of my best 3 attempts.

Rice County's mountain bike club, @croctmtb, hoste Rice County's mountain bike club, @croctmtb, hosted a trail maintenance work crew today on the @cityofnorthfield's Sechler Park trail near @downtownnorthfieldmn. The trail along the Cannon River continues to be popular year-round for mountain bikers, hikers, trail runners, and dog walkers.

The crew cleared the leaves off the trail so that when the snow melts in the spring, it dries out more quickly. They also trimmed back the encroaching tree branches, primarily buckthorn.

Let it snow!
With a big assist from the @cityofnorthfield Publi With a big assist from the @cityofnorthfield Public Works staff, the @croctmtb MTB skills park in Northfield’s Sechler Park got some improvements this year. Workers brought in several truckloads of dirt to improve six of the seven beginner and intermediate jumps in the main jump line and expand the launch mound. In addition, they moved the giant boulder lurking along the park’s swampy edge and reinstalled the kiosk next to the launch mound.

CROCT (Cannon River Offroad Cycling and Trails), our local mountain bike club in Rice County, has partnered with the City of Northfield to have a multi-purpose trail in the City’s Sechler Park since the club was founded in 2014. I’m one of the CROCT volunteers who helps to maintain the skills park.
